The New Zealand Police has recruited its first Artificial Intelligence based police officer called “Ella”. It is a life-like virtual assistant that uses real-time animation to emulate face-to-face interaction in an empathetic way.
New Zealand tech firms Intela AI and Soul Machines led the AI and digital human development of Ella. They programmed it to use voice, tone and body language to deliver a one-on-one service.

BlueDot now part of Canada’s COVID-19 arsenal
The Canadian government announced it would use BlueDot’s disease analytics platform to support modelling and monitoring of COVID-19, as well as to guide government decision-making.
Khan, who’s also a scientist and infectious disease specialist at St. Michael’s Hospital, says BlueDot will provide the federal government with insights and intelligence to help combat the virus – in part by using anonymous location data from hundreds of millions of mobile devices to see how the public health response is working

MeMed to predict which COVID-19 patients will worsen
MeMed Diagnostics is known mostly for developing devices and tests that can rapidly distinguish between certain bacteria and viruses, based on the immune system’s response, mainly in order to prevent unnecessary use of antibiotics. The company is now developing another test for early detection of viruses (including coronavirus) and predicting deterioration in the patient’s situation. According to MeMed, development and application of the devices can be very quick.
